Emergency Response Program for Flood Victims 2010, Pakistan

The summer 2010 flood in Pakistan devastated millions of homes, destroyed more than 3 million acres crops and ruined million dollars infrastructure. It was the worst flooding in 80 years. Nearly 20 million people, one eighth of the population (about the population of New York State), have been significantly affected. The number in urgent need was more than 12 million people.

The flood began in the last week of July and continued to ruin the four provinces Khyber-Pakhtunkhaw, Southern Punjab and Sindh and affected about one-fifth of the country, nearly 62000 Square miles- or an area larger than England, according to the UN. More than 20 million people were affected according to the latest reports of the Government, and the official death toll was 2400. Over 722,000 houses were totally damaged or destroyed. Other houses which are hit by more than 15 feet high water are not able to live as water has badly affected the walls and foundations. The flood water devastated towns, villages and washed away bridges, roads, destroyed crops and livestock and caused the major damage to schools and hospitals.

The Aim4Faith Ministries was in action for more than 4 months to support and help the needy and deserving people who were in great need and trouble at that time. We approached heavily victimized areas without differences of any cast or religion.

Food for 5900 People

Aim4Faith Ministries provided food to more than 5900 people in District Jhang and Muzzafarghar. A nine day food package was provided to each family at the very crucial time when the means of transportation were totally destroyed or damaged with water. To respond this emergency Aim4Faith Ministries reached the very difficult areas and provided food to the families for their survival.

Shelter for 50 Families

Aim4Faith Ministries provided T-irons and Guarders to most deserving families. The one roof material was provided to build a room for protection from extreme winter and summer. The families were selected after visiting the areas and this support was provided to those who lost everything and were living below the poverty line. The total fifty families were provided this material.

Wheat Seed for 100 Farmers

Aim4Faith Ministries provided wheat seed for one acre cultivation to small farmers who owned the land less than 5 acres or have rented land for their livelihood. The lists were prepared by the volunteers and staff of Aim4Faith Ministries and then seed was provided to chak 5 and 6 Rangpur farmers. In the heavy floods they lost their seed banks and time was really tough for them to support their families.

Quilts for 200 Families Or 400 Children

Aim4Faith Ministries provided quilts to 200 families in the flooded areas. The winter is always very cold in these areas as Pakistan has the extreme weather. In the very cold weather we provided this to most deserving families. It helped them keep warm in the very cold weather and saved many children from winter. It protected them from different diseases caused by the cold.

School Bags and Stationary

School bags and stationary were provided to more than 100 children to start their studies again. In the heavy floods they lost their books, stationary and bags. This was very difficult time for them and they were not able to continue their studies again.

Safe Drinking Water for 42000 People

Aim4Faith Ministries provided water purification medicine to more than 42000 people in the flooded areas with the help of our local partners (Qarshi Foundation). This medicine is used to purify water and from all contaminations. It protects people from water borne diseases like cholera, diarrhoea etc. It also protects people from Hepatitis B which is most common disease in Pakistan.

Medical Camps for Flood Victims

Aim4Faith Ministries arranged free medical camps for the flood victims and reached more than 4000 people with free medicines. The doctors and teams remained in the flooded areas for a month to help people from epidemic and water borne diseases and saved many children, women and men. In the four districts there were more than 1 million children and 50,000 pregnant women who were badly affected.

Final Words

Aim4Faith Ministries reached to these areas without any difference of cast or religion, the majority of the people were Muslims who were affected by flood. The steps taken by Aim4Faith Ministries helped to promote interfaith harmony among the different religious and ethnic groups.

It also helped to build a strong network in the region as we worked with government and non-government organization. The Pakistani media come to show how Christians were active in those areas to support the needy and poor. This was the direct message of our Lord to those people and media was the witness of all this. We had very good feedback and encouragement from government sector, private sector and print and electronic media.

We are very thankful for your support and wonderful initiative to work in Pakistan at the time of need and sorrow.
